In this context, self‑efficacy may play an important protective role. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between self‑efficacy and suicidal ideation with the mediating role of job stress among medical residents at Guilan University of Medical Sciences.
Method: This applied study employed a descriptive–correlational design. The statistical population consisted of all medical residents at Guilan University of Medical Sciences in the academic year 2024–2025. From this population, 131 participants were selected using proportional stratified random sampling. The research instruments included the General Self‑Efficacy Questionnaire by Sherer and Maddux, the Osipow Job Stress Questionnaire, and the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation. Data were analyzed using SPSS‑26 software.
Method: The demographic characteristics of the 131 medical residents indicated that 78 participants (59.5%) were female; 40.5% were married; 45.8% were aged 31–35 years. The highest proportion of participants (19.1%) belonged to the cardiology specialty, while the lowest frequency (5.3%) was related to orthopedics and neurosurgery. The findings also showed that self‑efficacy had a significant negative relationship with suicidal ideation, whereas job stress had a significant positive relationship with it (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that increasing self‑efficacy, through reducing job stress, can play an important role in decreasing suicidal ideation among medical residents. Therefore, it is recommended that intervention programs and supportive policies in the medical education system focus on reducing job stress and strengthening individual psychological resources.
