Instructions for Authors
General Guidelines for Manuscript Submission
1. The journal is open access and no cost will be charge for submission, review or publication. Also no APC wont be received.
2. The language of the article is Persian. Writing guidelines related to diction, grammar, orthography and spelling, punctuation, and mechanics should be carefully observed.
3. The manuscript should be typed in Microsoft Word using B Nazanin font and the English text should be typed using Times New Roman font, size 12. It should be submitted to this journal at http://jmed.ssu.ac.ir .
4. The manuscript should not have been published or considered for publication by any other journals. Otherwise, the manuscript will be automatically withdrawn from consideration.
5. If there are more than one author, the names of other authors and the order of the names should be given and signed by all authors (Form No. 2).
6. The editorial board is free in accepting, rejecting, or modifying and editing the submitted manuscript.
7. The responsibility of the published materials and references in the article will be with author(s)’.
8. The manuscript will be considered in the editorial board. If it corresponds to the requirements of the journal, it will be accepted and sent to referees for peer-reviewing. Otherwise, it will be rejected and sent back to the corresponding author.
9. If the author does not observe the required regulations and guidelines of the journal, it will be rejected.
10. Ethics approval from one of authorised affiliated universities and organizations of Iranian Ministry of Health, for Iranian manuscripts, or an eligible ethic committee, for other countries, is required for all manuscripts submitted to JMED. A unique ethics approval code should be quoted in the method section of all manuscripts from March 2018 onward. The code is different according to the issueing authority for example: IR.SSU.REC.1396.351
11. From March 2018 all randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) must be registered in Iran RCT registery (www.irct.ir).
The Review Process
A manuscript is submitted for publication at http://85.185.157.11:6280/jmed/index.php?&slct_pg_id=10&sid=1&slc_lang=en . The Editor-in-Chief checks the manuscript for proper format and conformance with submission instructions and acknowledges receipt.
The manuscript is then assigned to the appropriate Editorial Board that select 3 or more qualified reviewers. Notification is sent by the journal website editorial manager to each reviewer who is asked to confirm his or her willingness to perform the review in a timely manner (within Two weeks if possible). The review process is double blind i.e. no information about the authors will be provided to the reviewers and vice versa. The JMED Coordinator is given tracks of the review process to make sure that it moves ahead as rapidly as possible. All the review process is recorded on the journal website editorial manager.

Guidelines for Manuscript Writing Structure of Original Research Articles: Original research articles should include:
-Title, Abstract (English and Persian), Body(introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, Conclusion, acknowledgement, Conflicts of interest, figures, tables), References, and Appendix (instruments, questionnaires). Each main section should start on a separate page and be numbered consecutively at the bottom left corner of the page.
Title Page:
Title page should include the title of the manuscript, forename/surname(s) and author(s) affiliation(s), along with the contact information of the corresponding author including e-mail, phone number, fax number, and date of submission, . In case of any financial support, it is important to mention the name of the sponsor and the project number at the end of the manuscript.
Abstract:
The abstract of the submitted article should be structured not exceeding 250 words. It should consist of: Title, Introduction, Methods, Results, conclussion,Keywords. The abstract should represent the main content of the article. Key words should be given at the end of the abstract including 3-5 key terms. Keywords must be MeSH terms.
- The English abstract is also required. It should exactly correspond to the Persian abstract including: Title, Author(s), Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion, and Key Words. Also, it should be structured and not exceeding 250 words.
The Body of the manuscript should consist of:
Introduction: It must include justification and rationale of the study, statement of the problem, review on other studies, objectives of the study, and research questions. It should not exceed two pages and the Vancouver method of numbering references should be applied in the introduction.
Methods : It must include type of research, method of research, subjects and participants, sampling method, instruments and materials, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures and techniques, and statistical software used, ethical issues, etc.). Ethics approval is required for all manuscipts submitted to JMED in the method section. A unique ethics approval code should be quoted in the method section of all manuscripts from march 2018 onward. The code is different according to the issueing authority for example: IR.SSU.REC.1396.351.
Results: The findings should be reported using a suitable number of tables, figures, pictures, maps, statistics, etc. The number of figures or tables should not exceed 5. The figures, tables, etc. should be self-explanatory, numbered, have clear title and legend, and not hand-drawn. The tables should not be lined. Tables whose data is given completely in the body of the article, should be excluded.
Discussion: This part includes discussing the important findings of the study based on its specific objectives in a logical order, approving, rejecting, or modifying the research hypotheses, strong and weak points of the study, comparing and contrasting the results with those of similar studies, practical applications and implications of results, limitations of the study, and suggestions for further research.
Conclusion: The researcher should summarize the study and the findings briefly and clearly based on research findings and the limitations.
Author contributions: In this section, each author’s contribution must be exactly declared using initials to indicate each author’s identity. Each author must contribute at least two parts (for example, “J.C. and T.P. designed the study; J.C., D.N, and R.K. conducted the experimental work; B.A. analyzed the data; H.L. and B.A. wrote the manuscript, etc.”). Based on the recommendations by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors/ICMJE (http://www.icmje.org) about the conduct, reporting, editing and publication of scholarly work in medical journals, all authors should have made significant conceptual, intellectual, experimental, and analytical contributions to the research, as well as having participated in writing and revising the manuscript.
Acknowledgments: The researcher should mention the name of those people or organizations who directly or indirectly supported, participated, cooperated, collaborated in writing the article but whose name(s) is not given as authors, or financially funded the research. Also, articles distilled from MA/MS students’ theses, or PhD students’ dissertations, or from original research projects, should acknowledge it via the sentence: “This article is based on student’s thesis, dissertation, or original research”.
Conflicts of interest: Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in an organization, that may profit or lose through publication of the manuscript. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic rejection of the paper, but readers and editorial board should be aware of it.
Funding: This article is from a master's/doctorate thesis/dissertation or from a research project without national support of the first/second/third author in the group ??? College ??? University ???/organization/institute ???number ??? to date ??? has been extracted. This study is supported by the research project number ???, by the university/organization, and ??? Funded. This research has not received any financial support from government, public, commercial or non-profit financial organizations.
Ethical Considerations: All ethical principles are considered in this article. The participants were informed about the purpose of the research and its implementation steps. They were also assured of the confidentiality of their information and could leave the study at any time and the results of the study would be made available to them if they wished. Written consent was obtained from the participants. The principles of APA and the Helsinki Convention were also observed. This study was approved by the ethics committee of the university. Tables, Graphs and Figures:
· Tables, Graphs and Figures should be formatted in accordance with the text.
· Use of tables, graphs and figures should be appropriate and not redundant; examples of these (some do not contribute to results of the study) are a 2-row table, figures of routine Lab Tools or pictures of killed lab animals as witnesses to the true nature of the study. Most authorities believe that for each 500 to 700 words there should be one figure or table.
· The tables, graphs and figures should be written within the text, be numbered, have a complete title, be clear, have legend and not hand-drawn. The picture should be so clear that the findings alluded to in the title or text of the article could be visible and when necessary should be colored. In some cases the original picture should be submitted as the computer generated electrophoresis or EKG graph may not be useful.
· Deduction of the true purpose of a table or figure should be possible without referring to the text of the article.
· Tables and figures should explain the findings in brief.
· Numbering the indexes should be consecutive in the text of the article.
· Tables and figures should be numbered as they appear in the article.
1. Pictures, tables, and figures should be written within the text. They should be in the body of the article.
2. Tables and figures should be written in Persian and include clear titles and legend. The dimensions should be maximally 12 x 8 cm and the number should not exceed 4.
3. The submitted pictures should be in the electronic formats of Tiff or Jpeg.
4. Each table should be numbered consecutively in the order used in the article.
Editorial board is free to accept, revise (with author's permission) and/or reject a manuscript.
Reference Writing:
-The references should be numbered consecutively in order of citation in the text and the style should correspond to the "Vancouver Reference Writing".
-All references should be given in English. Regarding the Persian articles, you can gain the required information by turning to the electronic version of the article in internet websites as the website of the intended article or the Iranian websites as http://www.iranmedex.com http://www.magiran.com or http://www.sid.ir . Beware that a personal translation of the article is not acceptable. It is necessary to add the word “Persian” at the end of Persian references given in English.
A) Persian and English Books :
surname and forename of the author, (if there are more than three authors, write the names of the three authors and then add “et al” after a comma), full title of the book, edition no., place of publication, name of publisher, year of publication, and the first and last page of the material.
Example: Bulter T. Principles of Health Education and Health Promotion. 2nd ed. USA: Morton publication. 200l: 234- 247.
References should be cited consecutively by numbers as they appear in the text using the Vancouver style and they should be given at the end of article in references as they appear in the text. They should be cited by naming the author(s) and year. Where references are cited in parentheses, both names and date are enclosed in square brackets. Where the author is the subject or object of the sentence, only the year is enclosed in brackets.
One author: [Frostell, 1984] or Frostell [1984].
Two authors: [Dawes and Spencer, 1990] or Dawes and Spencer [1990].
More than two authors: [Trahan et al., 1985] or Trahan et al. [1985].
Several references cited in parentheses should be in date order and separated by semi-colons: [Frostell, 1984; Trahan et al., 1985; Dawes and Spencer, 1990].
B) Foreign Translated Books: Surname and forename of the translator, “In translation” full title of the book, the original author of the book, publication number, and publication place, publisher’s name, publication year: the first and last page number of the material.
Example: Nayebi H. (In translation) Surveys in Social Research. Davaws DA. 3rd Ed. Tehran : Ney Press.2003:210-217.
C) Chapter of a Book: Surname and initials of the author(s) of the chapter. Title of the chapter. In: surname and initials of the author(s). Name of the book. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher; Year; Page.
Example : Phillips SJ, Whisnant JP. Hypertension and Stroke. In: Laragh JH, Brenner BM, editors. Hypertension: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Management. 2nd ed. New York: Raven Press 1995; 465-78.
D) Persian Articles: Print surnames and initials of all authors when there are six or less (in case of seven or more authors, the first six must be followed by et al), Title of manuscript, Name of journal. Year; Vol. (no): Page. Persian articles should be transliterated in Latin scripts.
Example: Mohammadi A, Mojtahedzadeh R, Keshavarz H. Designing Criteria and Indices for Educational Ranking of Paramedical Sciences Schools in Iran. SDME 2006; 3(2): 86-94. [Persian]
E) English Articles: Print surnames and initials of all authors when there are six or less (in case of seven or more authors the first six authors followed by et al should be listed), Title of manuscript. Abbreviated name of journal Year; Vol. (no): Page.

Review Articles:
-This journal will accept systematic review articles of high significance including relatively large samples written in one of the following areas:
-Review of books on medical education written in Persian or English language including 750-1000 words.
-Report of conferences on medical education held in I. R. of Iran or other parts of the world maximally up to two months after the conference date including 1200-1500 words.
-Analytic articles or analysis and criticism of references on a specific topic or new trends and theories in medical sciences including maximally 3500 words.
-Nonsystematic reviews (Narrative reviews) should be written by experts contained the critical assessment of the current knowledge of the field. Different parts of these articles include abstract, introduction, discussion and conclusion. Abstract should be non-structured. They should contain at least 60 references and maximum 5000 words.
Short communication/Brief reports:
-can be in form of research article, systematic review or ongoing research which reports its interesting findings. The parts in this type of articles are like those of original one but they are smaller and prepared in maximum 2000 words. 10-15 references should be stated
Structure of Case Reports:
Case reports should include:
-Title, Unstructured English and Persian Abstracts (including maximally 100 words and Persian and English Key Words), Introduction, Case report, Discussion, References, and related Appendices.
Letter to Editor:
-This journal will accept letters related to the criticism or analysis of articles or content of the journal along with the response of the author of the article. The journal is free in selecting and publishing these letters. Further, these letters could be written about new innovations in medical education, useful experiences or valuable news of medical education in Iran or round the world. This should be prepared in maximum 1000-1500 word, 10 refrences and 1 or 2 figures and tabels.These articles need no structure.
